The Park is located in the north part of the state. On US 72 to Bridgeport, Alabama, turn north on County Road 91 and go to the town of Mt. Carmel, then turn right on County Road 75 to the Park entrance. The Park is about eight miles from Bridgeport.
WHEN TO VISIT
Open daily, year-round, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Holiday Closings: December 25. Summer weather is hot and humid, and Winters are usually mild with only occasional freezing temperatures or snow.
POINTS OF INTEREST
Russell Cave was discovered in 1953, and is an archaeological record of human habitation from at least 6000 B.C. to about 1650 A.D. Archaeologists have found tools and other items used by prehistoric people.
ACTIVITIES
Interpretive films and slide programs are shown upon request in the Park's audiovisual room and in the cave shelter area. There are demonstrations of ancient Indian life, interpretive exhibits and talks, and guided tours of the cave shelter for groups. There are hiking trails and an area for picnicking. There is handicapped accessibility in the Parking area and restrooms (limited); audio-visual programs; audio description of exhibits for sight-impaired; and printed cave program text for hearing impaired.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The hiking trail is steep and difficult; it is recommended to walk with care. Hikers are advised to not run on the trails, not wander from them, and not to take short cuts. Food and supplies are obtainable nearby in Bridgeport, South Pittsburg, and Stevenson. Overnight accommodations are available in Kimball, TN, (US 72 and I-24, eighteen miles); Stevenson, AL (US 72, approximately thirteen miles from the Park). The nearest hospital is in Bridgeport (County Road 75 to 91 to US 72, ten miles). Pets are to be kept on a leash.
